VSCSE - Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering

Call for Sites

We are recruiting partner sites for the following 2013 Summer School courses:

  • Big Data Summer School (July 8 - 10, 2013)
  • Proven Algorithmic Techniques for Many-core Processors (July 29 - August 2, 2013)

In addition, we are currently in the process of planning a number of smaller 1-2 day events this summer. We would appreciate your feedback about your level of interest and technology preferences for these courses.

Apply now to participate as a 2013 host site!

Each VSCSE course includes up to nine satellite sites that partcipate in the course through high-definition video conferencing. These remote sites typically host 25 - 35 students, and are a way for the host institutions to quickly enhance their computational science and engineering capacity and community by making each course accessible to a number of people from the surrounding area. We also ask that local sites host some out-of-town students, providing a chance for students to network with people who have similar interests.

We ask that our partners provide people who can play each of the following roles to make sure each course is successful:

  • Site Coordinator: One named contact who can be responsible for logistical, recruitment, and programmatic duties associated with each course.
  • Technical Coordinator: One named technical contact who will be responsible for the audio-visual systems at your site.
  • Teaching Assistants: Up to two people who can serve as local experts to help students with questions, moderate discussion, and provide assistance with lab activities. The VSCSE will provide a modest stipend to support the efforts of the TAs.

In addition to these roles, we ask that our partner sites:

  • Provide H.323-based video conferencing facilities (preferably high definition) that can host 20-35 participants.
  • Promote the VSCSE Summer School and support the recruitment of local participants.
  • Help out-of-town students make arrangements for lodging and food.

We will extend invitations to selected sites by the end of March. We will be selecting sites based on geographic distribution, site capacity, past registration numbers, and size of local community. In addition, we will create a balance of new and returning sites, and institutional diversity.
